Houston ISD Board of Trustees

HOUSTON VOTERS GUIDE

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board of Education is HISD’s governing body. Duties include establishing HISD policy and appointing the school superintendent. The nine board members are elected from single geographic districts for staggered 4-year terms with no term limits and serve without pay.

Note: As of June
1, 2023, the Texas Education Commissioner appointed a board of managers to govern HISD. The powers of the elected board of trustees are suspended for the period of the appointment. Trustees will, however, continue to be elected as terms expire. When local control of the district is reinstated, the powers and duties for governing HISD will be returned to the elected board of trustees.
