Having served over 28 years in the U. S. Congress and because I have a passion for service coupled with the ability to get results, it has provided with a wealth of opportunities to bring much needed services and dollars to the 18th District. I serve as Chief Deputy Whip, Senior Member on the Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees; past Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation; founder and co-chair of the Congressional Children's Caucus; past chair of the Texas Cong. The critical issues that I continue to fight for are quality healthcare, protection of the environment and affordable housing. I have expanded access to healthcare through the expansion of federally qualified community health centers. I have also fought to protect families suffering from cancer clusters and environmental pollution. Further, the additional effort and need is for expanded affordable housing for families and young residents as well as increasing access to housing for the homeless.
