Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
Reverse the acadmic decline and reduce wasteful spending. An audit of spending to reduce redundancy and remove waste frees resources of time and money to be used on initiatives and curricula that are effective. The board should vote to increase transparency and disclose audit results and contracts to the extent allowed by law. The district should use resources to support teachers better.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
There are numerous duplicate expenditures. All expenditures on curricula and supplies should be examined for their usefulness and effectiveness. Duplicate initiatives should be eliminated to save money which can be reallocated to better support teachers and students.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
The board should have access to the concerns made by teachers through the Teacher's Advisory Counsel. This would allow the board to follow up on the matters of concern, which would help with teacher retention. The district needs to hire more trained paraeducators to support teachers and prevent classroom disruption.
Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
This comes down to a proper education about the role and functioning of government at all levels. If a person is not educated about how their government works and how to engage with it, then they won't be able to advocate for the next generation. I think this type of education should be politically neutral. Government belongs to those who show up to vote. Students need to know how to engage and where to engage.
