T'Liza M. Kiel
Qualifications: What training, experience and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I’m a veteran, nonprofit leader, and first-generation college graduate with a strong record of community service, strategic leadership, and advocacy. My experience in education-focused initiatives, mental health, and youth programs, combined with my passion as a mom and equity-driven leader, uniquely prepares me to serve each and every student of Alvin ISD.
Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
Teacher retention is critical. The Board should prioritize competitive pay, mental wellness for staff and students, and workplace support. We must also re-evaluate our fiduciary responsibilities to ensure resources are used effectively and aligned with district priorities, especially as rising costs outpace stagnant state funding.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
The Board can secure the District’s financial future by re-evaluating expenditures for efficiency, prioritizing spending aligned with student outcomes, and advocating for increased state funding. Cost-saving measures could include reviewing administrative overhead and ensuring vendor contracts deliver maximum value.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
Burnout and lack of support are major challenges for teachers. The Board must focus on creating a culture where teachers feel valued, supported, and heard. By addressing workload, promoting mental wellness, and improving campus climate, we can make Alvin ISD a place where teachers want to stay and grow.
Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
The District should empower students to be informed citizens by teaching the impact of local elections and how state legislative sessions shape their future. The Board can support civic engagement by encouraging curriculum that includes how to research bills, follow policymaking, and understand their role in democracy—starting with their local community.
