Lee College Board of Trustees, Position 5
Susan Moore-Fontenot
Nonpartisan Race

BACKGROUND: What motivated you to run for this position, and what unique skills or experience make you the best candidate for the role?
I have been re-elected repeatedly because of my effectiveness and commitment to the students and community. I understand the complexities of community college governance. As former chair of the Board, current vice-chair, and over 20 years of leading the policy committee, I serve to help the college meet its fiduciary responsibilities while prioritizing student success and balancing taxpayer concerns. I Chair the Community College Association of Texas Trustees and have been a college instructor
ISSUES: What are the two (2) most critical issues you plan to tackle as a Board Member, and what specific strategies or initiatives will you implement to address them?
We must expand access to quality and affordable education for all 240,000+ residents in our service area. Some students have started their college education but have not finished and address area growth predictions. Using demographic data and targeted focus groups, we will design outreach programs to meet the unique needs of our students. Use articulation agreements to improve graduation and transfer rates for students pursuing bachelor’s degrees. We will use data-driven proven best practices.
FUTURE: What is your vision for the community college system over the next 20 years, and what actions should the Board of Trustees take to achieve it?
Community industries drive the workforce development needs, such as bachelor’s degree offerings starting with nursing. We will work with industry partners who will advise the curriculum needs so that our graduates are hired in jobs that provide high sustaining family wages. Industry partnership models, like apprenticeship programs, employer-sponsored training, or industry advisory boards shape these partnerships. Offer variety of options to non-taxing entities i.e. online, hybrid, etc.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: How will you engage community stakeholders, students, and staff in the Board's decision-making process?
Engage community stakeholders, students and staff in important decisions. EX. when we hired our current college president, I chaired the 20-member search committee composed of community and college representatives. Online surveys, focus groups, blue ribbon committees, and interviews are important methods of seeking input from stakeholders to get buy-in when their voices are sought as part of the decision-making process. The board's decision should reflect a sense of “community” and pride.
COLLEGE: What are the strengths of your community college system, and what do you appreciate most about it?
For 91 years, Lee College has been the cornerstone of higher education for East Harris, Chambers and Liberty counties. Our deep-rooted community support makes Lee College a place to learn while transforming students' lives. Our small college produces big successes. Lowering the tax rate four times since FY 2020 and no tuition increases five years running demonstrates our commitment to affordability and access. Our “First Time Free at Lee” initiative provides free tuition, books and fees.
