Alvin ISD Board of Trustees, Position 4
Regan Peterson

Nonpartisan Race

Regan Peterson
Qualifications: What training, experience and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Alvin ISD Board for 12 years, gaining valuable experience in leadership, strategic planning, and financial oversight. My colleagues have trusted me to serve as Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Board, a role I currently hold. I’m proud to contribute to the district’s success, and watching our students excel motivates me to continue ensuring they have the best opportunities for growth.
Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
School safety is a top priority for any school district, and ensuring that students and staff are safe is essential for creating an environment conducive to learning and growth. Strengthening the district's infrastructure, including secure entrances, security cameras, and campus access control systems, is essential for preventing unauthorized access and ensuring physical safety. The Board should prioritize ongoing investments in campus security.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
The Board should regularly update long-term budget projections, considering growth patterns, inflation, and potential changes in funding. Having a clear vision of future financial needs helps the district anticipate challenges and allocate resources effectively.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
Student behavior has become more challenging, which puts additional stress on teachers. Without sufficient support for managing behavior, it can be difficult for teachers to maintain a productive classroom environment. Many behavioral problems stem from emotional issues that require support beyond what teachers can provide. The board can prioritize hiring additional school counselors to help students manage stress, anxiety, and traumas.
Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
The Board can encourage student participation in elections by promoting voter registration efforts and educating students on the importance of voting to influence policies. We currently offer voter registration opportunities. Additionally, the Board can support volunteering initiatives by connecting students with charities, non-profits, and local causes. We do this with the "Alvin ISD Serves" day of volunteering each year.
