Qualifications: What training, experience and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I have over 14 years of experience in education, a Ph.D. in Latino Studies from the University of Houston, and a strong background in mental health advocacy, bilingual education, and policy development. My leadership in school funding, student support, and community engagement ensures I can effectively serve Humble ISD students and families.
Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
Humble ISD must expand mental health resources, improve equitable funding, and enhance bilingual education. The Board should prioritize student well-being, increase community partnerships, and ensure transparent decision-making. By investing in support services, professional development, and inclusive policies, we can create a stronger, healthier learning environment for all students and staff.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
The Board should prioritize transparent budgeting, efficient resource allocation, and securing additional funding through grants and partnerships. Expenditures on administrative overhead, outdated programs, and underutilized resources should be reviewed for cost-saving opportunities. Investing in mental health services, teacher support, and student programs ensures long-term financial and educational sustainability.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
Teachers face burnout, inadequate mental health support, low pay, and increasing workloads. The Board must prioritize competitive salaries, smaller class sizes, better mental health resources, and professional development opportunities. By fostering a supportive work environment and addressing teacher concerns, we can retain quality educators and enhance student success.
Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
The District can strengthen civic education by integrating government, history, and critical thinking courses that encourage student participation in democracy. The Board should support voter registration drives, student-led civic projects, and partnerships with local organizations to promote engagement, leadership, and awareness of democratic responsibilities in their community and beyond.
