BACKGROUND: What motivated you to run for City Council, and what unique skills or experience make you the best candidate for the role?
I have lived in WUP all my life (since 1956). I served on city council in 2000. I serve an several and diverse boards of directors. My leadership style is one of respectful engagement with those I serve. I hope to instill calm engagement of the opportunities and challenges of our little city, so to maintain and improve the safety, convivence and enjoyment of its citizens. I look for common ground among the varied constituencies concerns and desires.
ISSUES: What are the two most pressing issues you plan to address as a City Council Member, and what specific strategies will you use to solve them?
1. Encourage a review of the proposed "Master Plan" trying to take the current engagement from the "zero-sum-game" of "polar extremes" to a genuine reconstruction of the plan addressing the cost, functionality and esthetics concerns.
2. Have an open review of the state of the city, looking at safety, infrastructure (e.g. drainage) and quality of life issues (e.g. services and facilities).
FUTURE: What is your vision for the city in 10 years, and what steps will you take to achieve it?
I would like to see WUP at a better place as to crime (i.e. burglary, traffic violations), improved disaster responsiveness (e.g. flooding) and less insularity of its citizens (think block parties and support of children & adolescent activities). To accomplish an address of these issues a robust and broad methods of citizen and staff input needs to be nurtured.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: How will you engage residents in the city's decision-making process?
1. Be polite to those who come forward, listening more than lecture.
2. Use many & varied methods to solicit opinions of citizens each step of the way within issue review from townhalls, properly constructed surveys professionally crafted to avoid design bias, City Current newsletters, social media, presence at gathering places: Tri-Sports, city facilities, local businesses, churches, walking the streets.
3. More effectively use the public comment time at meetings to routinely offer follow-up.
COMMUNITY: What are your favorite things about your city?
Civic pride: Most WUP citizens really enjoy the safety, convenience and appearance. Many utilize the offerings of the city services and use patronize the businesses within WUP. I have enjoyed growing, raising my family and growing old here.
