Qualifications: What training, experience and characteristics qualify you for this position?
With 14 years in education, including a decade at Dawson High School, I understand the challenges teachers and students face. I have been a Pearland resident for 17 years, have two daughters in Pearland ISD, and I am active in our community. I serve on the Pearland ISD Education Foundation Board and in many other community organizations. As Director of Sales for a construction company, I bring financial expertise to prioritize student success.
Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
Based on my educational background, and experience in the classroom, I would like to collaborate with board members and our superintendent on the following: Enhancing Teacher recruitment/retention; Evaluating and enhancing safety/security (including mental health needs); Maintaining district academic strengths and enhancing CTE offerings.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
The following budget items could be reviewed to determine if the changes best serve our district: Explore further increases in teacher wages and benefits; Evaluate social work services for additional resources; Assess special education resources for teachers and students; Understand how new/undecided legislative action impacts current budget projections. We currently have a balanced budget and need to continue to do so.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
Retaining quality teachers is crucial, as turnover comes with high costs. With a current turnover rate of 14%, 5% below the state average, I aim to reduce it to 12% in two years. To do so, we should offer merit-based incentives, consider increasing teacher pay within our budget, and promote collaboration across campuses to share successful morale-boosting programs. These actions can help retain teachers and improve overall morale.
Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
The District teaches government at all high schools as a graduation requirement, providing students with foundational knowledge. To further promote civic engagement, I encourage opportunities for students to get involved, as I have with my campaign. I’ve engaged students across the district to participate in a student-led interview "podcast" and to volunteer at the polls giving them hands-on experience in a nonpartisan election.
