Alvin ISD Board of Trustees, Position 5
Cheryl B. Harris
Nonpartisan Race

Qualifications: What training, experience and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I served 12 years as a Trustee, Secretary, and Past-President. During this time, the student population has grown rapidly, increasing from 19,000 to 30,000 students. I supported three bonds that funded the construction of two high schools, a CTE center, and several junior high and elementary schools. Additionally, my experience working for Alvin ISD provided an understanding of the complex school funding, district budget process, and policies.
Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
Student success is an opportunity that is ever-changing. The board should continue to support students achieving greater success with approving programming such as the WINGS and STEM Academies, providing courses for current workforce-ready trade certifications, and more rigorous lessons aligned to the TEKS.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
The board must prioritize balancing the needs of students with the financial impact on taxpayers. The school district closely monitors legislative sessions, as funding is subject to constant change. They provide the board with information for consideration during the budget process. Since COVID-19, inflation has affected all materials, particularly insurance, making it essential to have a well-thought-out plan.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
With classrooms becoming increasingly diverse in student needs, teachers may struggle to meet the varied needs of their students, especially those requiring additional support.
To better support and retain teachers, the Board can take several actions, such as allocating more funds for professional development, a feedback mechanism, and wellness checks.

Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
The District prepares students for democracy by integrating civic education into the curriculum and promoting community engagement. With district and board support, Shadow Creek High School students participated in voting for their school mascot using real voting machines provided by Brazoria Co Elections, giving them a real-life experience of voting. Students also learn more about community engagement by participating in Alvin ISD Serves.
