State Representative, District 126
Non-partisan election information about Sarah Smith, Candidate - State Representative, District 126 by the League of Women Voters of Houston
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
Senate District 7 Precinct 668 Pct. Chair of 4 yrs.. Studied Political Theory, Comparative Politics & Public Policy. Unique ability to engage & gain support, engagement, etc. inclusively even among people who may have biases. I let people know I truly "hear" and "see" their issues/needs and then I strategize action. My military background, family upbringing, life and work experiences and integrity have shaped me to be discipline, a leader of excellence for humanity with dedication and purpose.
Article 7 of the Texas Constitution states that “it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.” What is your interpretation of what this clause requires of the legislature?
1. Establish Public School Systems. 2. Provide adequate funding. 3. Ensure efficiency. My interpretation of this clause is that it requires the Legislature to prioritize education as a fundamental right and ensure that every child in Texas has access to quality public education, regardless of their background or where they live. It calls for the Legislature to fund public schools adequately and ensure resources, infrastructure, and support systems are in place for measurable educational outcomes
How will you ensure that Texas remains a leader in the energy sector through innovation and reliability?
I would take a comprehensive approach focusing on strategic investments, policy support and collaboration with industry leaders. Support investing in renewable energy innovation and technology and modernizing and strengthening the energy grid. Support investing in STEM education programs to prepare next generation of energy workers. Work with leaders to develop policies that reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens while ensuring environmental & safety standards and focus also on CCUS initiatives.
What do you believe is the appropriate role of the State of Texas in ensuring that Texans have access to reproductive healthcare, family planning, and pregnancy care and postpartum services?
I believe State of TX has a fundamental responsibility to ensure that all Texans have access to comprehensive, affordable and community-based healthcare guaranteed for everyone, regardless of their location or economic status. Mental health services are also crucial, as navigating pregnancy, family planning, and postpartum experiences can be deeply emotional. Counseling & Mental health support should be readily accessible to help women make informed decisions and maintain their well-being.
What other issues are high priorities for the people of your district? Please give specific examples of measurable actions that you will take to address these issues.
1. Lack of representation and community engagement.2. Economic Equality and Support for Small Businesses. 3. Flooding & Infrastructure Challenges. 4. Public Safety & Crime.5. Traffic Congestion & Transportation Issues. 6. Environmental Concerns & Air Quality 7. Healthcare Access & Affordability.
