What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
Thank you for allowing me to serve you as judge of the 129th District Court for the past 16 years. I love my job and ask for your vote. I am the son of migrant farm workers, a native Texan, and a lifelong resident of Houston who loves and appreciates our diverse community. Our court is committed to treating everyone with courtesy and respect. I also understand that jury service is a sacrifice for many, so we are conscientious of your time while also respecting the rights of the parties.
What will you do to promote the just, prompt, and affordable resolution of civil cases that come before your court?
Our system of justice only works if we truly believe that our judges are neutral arbiters of disputes. We expect our judges to be fair and impartial and to follow the law, without bias, prejudice, or favor. This is an obligation I take to heart. As someone who comes from a modest background, I understand the importance of a level playing field especially between those of means and those without. As such, my decisions are guided only by the law, common sense, and fair play.
What will you do to ensure that cases before your court are heard in a timely manner?
I have streamlined our hearing docket and allow counsel and parties to appear remotely to save everyone time and money. On the bench, I make it a priority to facilitate the resolution of disputes between parties in a way that addresses everyone's concerns and needs. I also encourage parties to mediate their cases to see if the parties can resolve their disputes before incurring significant costs and attorneys fees.
