Maryann Perez

Democrat
State Representative, District 144
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I am currently serving my fifth term in the Texas House of Representatives. I was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2012. Before serving as a State Representative, I was the Chairwoman of the Houston Community College Board of Trustees.
Article 7 of the Texas Constitution states that “it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools.” What is your interpretation of what this clause requires of the legislature?
I have always been a strong supporter of public schools. I believe that the Legislature should prioritize a public school system that is fully funded, accountable, effective, equitable, and adaptable, ensuring that all Texas children have access to high-quality education. After all, today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders.
How will you ensure that Texas remains a leader in the energy sector through innovation and reliability?
To ensure that Texas remains a leader in the energy sector, we need to strengthen our infrastructure, modernize the grid, support workforce development with education and training programs, and invest in research and development to drive advancements in energy technologies.
What do you believe is the appropriate role of the State of Texas in ensuring that Texans have access to reproductive healthcare, family planning, and pregnancy care and postpartum services?
I believe that all Texans should have access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. Access to care enables individuals to make informed choices about their bodies and lives, promoting physical and mental health. We need to focus on providing comprehensive healthcare policies, funding clinics and healthcare providers, supporting educational programs, and ensuring equitable access to services across all communities.
What other issues are high priorities for the people of your district? Please give specific examples of measurable actions that you will take to address these issues.
Consumer protection remains a priority. During the 86th, 87th, and 88th Legislative Sessions, I championed legislation to address card skimming at gas pumps and financial fraud. Notably, House Bill 2106 (87R) established the Financial Crimes Intelligence Center, which helps coordinate law enforcement efforts to better combat card skimming and other organized financial crimes. Texas has taken the lead on this issue, and I am committed to further strengthening our efforts to safeguard Texans.
