What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I have represented TX-07 for five years and found that the most important qualification is knowing, believing in, and caring about all the people this office serves. As a life-long resident of Houston and as a representative for Houstonians from all walks of life—for more than a decade as a lawyer, and now as a member of Congress—my knowledge and understanding of the issues facing TX-07, ability to build coalitions, and commitment to our community’s values have prepared me to represent TX-07.
What actions do you support to address cost of living concerns?
In Congress, I have worked to help address cost of living by supporting and voting for policies that lower the cost of health care coverage, cap the cost of insulin for seniors on Medicare at $35 a month, limit out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors at $2,000 a year, and allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices; restore the expanded Child Tax Credit to put more money in parents’ pockets; make housing more affordable in all our communities; and make child care more affordable.
What are your priorities regarding immigration policy? What specific actions would you take to address these priorities?
In Congress, I have worked to address our broken immigration system, advocating for comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to legal status and citizenship that is thoughtful, practical, and fair; strengthening our border security and helping ensure that law enforcement can keep our communities safe; protecting DACA and TPS recipients; and accelerating immigration cases at USCIS while ensuring due process.
What is the role of the federal government in establishing laws and regulations related to reproductive healthcare services including family planning, pregnancy care and post- partum services? Please explain your position.
The role of the federal government is to ensure the freedom of all Americans, including their freedom to make their own decisions about their families and their ability to access the full range of reproductive health care. That freedom has been eliminated in Texas, and I am leading efforts to protect Texans’ right to travel to access care, to use birth control, and to protect the Title X Family Planning funding program, as well as to restore the framework of Roe v. Wade in federal law.
What measures do you support to address environmental issues and natural disasters, such as air quality, extreme weather events, drought, and flooding?
In Congress, I have worked with local and national leaders on both sides of the aisle to to secure the resources, information, and assistance to rebuild from extreme weather events and to prepare for the future, including passing a law to enable disaster relief projects to begin sooner, leading a bill to provide a more permanent funding source for coastal infrastructure and flood resiliency projects, and obtaining millions in congressional funding for key flood mitigation projects at home.
