Qualifications: What characteristics and experience qualify you to serve as a justice?
I have served as a judge for 25 years at three levels of the state judiciary (5 on the Court). Board certified in trial and appellate law. I study the facts and faithfully apply the law in each case.
Ethics: Since judicial candidates solicit donations and raise money to be elected, how can voters be assured that campaign donations will not impact how judges interpret the law and review lower court decisions?
I work hard to act with honesty, integrity, and respect toward all who come before the Court. Judges promise to fairly apply the constitution and laws to the facts. This oath requires that we set aside any outside influence and follow the law. It is a solemn responsibility. I have been honored for my professionalism and integrity throughout my career.
Equity: What can be done to improve access to justice for all, including persons or groups who may be underserved?
We must reduce the cost of legal help with innovation, secure legal aid for those in need, and remind the public that access to justice for all Texans is essential. Recently, our Court launched a licensing program for paralegals and court access assistants to help underserved people. I represented people in need and served on a legal aid board. It is the obligation we have as lawyers.
Judicial Elections: How would the administration of justice be impacted if judges ran in nonpartisan races?
The work of the Court would not change, but it may change public perception of the judiciary. No change can happen without the support of voters and their elected representatives. The Governor and the Legislature formed a bipartisan commission that has made recommendations to them about judicial selection. I support this process and efforts to improve public trust and confidence in the judiciary.
Other Issues: What issues do you believe will be the most pressing for the Texas Supreme Court?
Increasing access to justice is a top priority. Also: improving outcomes for children and those with mental health needs who appear in court, increasing transparency in court operations, and fostering innovation. Responsiveness to the challenges facing Texans who are parties to a dispute and respect for all who encounter our courts will help maintain public trust and confidence in our judiciary.
