Qualifications: What characteristics and experience qualify you to serve as a judge?
My experience as both a prosecutor and criminal defense attorney qualifies me to serve. Also, I served as Commissioner and Chairman of TDLR and heard thousands of administrative law appeals.
Ethics: Since judicial candidates solicit donations and raise money to be elected, how can voters be assured that campaign donations will not impact how judges interpret the law and review lower court decisions?
In my opinion, this is an issue that definitely should be addressed by the legislature.
On a personal level, I believe that my faith in God and my commitment to justice are anchors that will ensure that my decisions are not influenced by donors.
Judicial Elections: How would the administration of justice be impacted if judges ran in nonpartisan races?
I do not favor this approach.
Equity: What can be done to improve access to justice for all, including persons or groups who may be underserved?
There has been progress in this area through the pro bono efforts of the State Bar of Texas. Also, if someone is indigent in a criminal case, they may request a court-appointed attorney. We should continue to pursue these endeavors to ensure access to justice, especially in criminal cases.
Philosophy: What is your judicial philosophy?
My commitment is to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Texas and to never legislate from the bench and thereby undermine the will of the voters. I will not betray the trust of the voters.
