Ed Gonzalez

Democrat
Sheriff
Non-partisan election information about Ed Gonzalez, Candidate - Sheriff by the League of Women Voters of Houston
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I am the current Sheriff, a former HPD sergeant, and former City Council member. Public safety is always my north star. We’re bringing accountability by requiring all deputies and detention officers to wear body cameras. We’re making our county stronger against natural disasters, leading rescue operations during emergencies. We’re doing more to empower women and families and keep them safe. I am the only candidate in this race who will stand up against Texas' extreme abortion ban.
We’re working hard to reduce violent crime, creating the department’s first-ever Violent Offenders Task Force, Street Crimes Unit, and Community Problem-Oriented Policing Unit. We’re laser-focused on women and families, providing counseling and support to children with a parent in jail, educational and vocational programs for incarcerated women to help them stay out of jail after they’ve served their time, and raising the number of women deputies. I am the only pro-choice candidate in this race.
I am out in the community every day. We operate a proactive Community Engagement Division that connects with and develops relationships with the public to build a stronger community that is prepared to face any challenges or circumstances by equipping citizens with necessary knowledge and experience. We assist citizens in the reduction of crime through proactive crime prevention measures and victimization avoidance.
We offer education and job training to nonviolent offenders. We’ve dramatically increased resources for mental health treatment. We have an intense drug prevention program with training that allows jailed graduates to become certified recovery coaches and helps find employment for them upon release. We’ve dedicated new resources to help incarcerated military veterans. We provide holistic services to women in jail, including educational and vocational programs from Houston Community College.
