Denise Morrison

Non-Partisan
Klein ISD Board of Trustees, Position 4
Non-partisan election information about Denise Morrison, Candidate - Klein ISD Board of Trustees, Position 4 by the League of Women Voters of Houston
Qualifications: What training, experience and characteristics qualify you for this position?
As a parent to Klein alum, I know what works in Klein ISD and areas in need of improvement. As a grandparent to current students, I am personally invested in the success of our schools. With 25+ years as a Finance Manager, I am uniquely qualified to help make Klein ISD financially healthy again. Right now, we face a lot of debt and interest which is taking much-needed resources away from teachers and students.
Opportunities: What opportunities for improvement do you identify in the District and how do you feel the Board should work towards those goals?
Student test scores have been declining in recent years and I will do everything in my power to better support our faculty, teachers and students so that we can achieve improved student outcomes. We should listen to the teachers as to their needs, listen to the parents as to student needs.
Funding: What actions can the Board take to secure the financial future of the District? Specifically, are there any expenditures you feel should be examined as a cost-saving measure?
Unfortunately, Klein ISD makes it very difficult to analyze their finances. Unlike every other district surrounding Klein, we do not have online access to the Check Register. That will be one of the changes which should help us answer this question as a community.
Supporting Teachers: What do you see as the most pressing issues facing teachers in the District? What actions can the Board take to better support and retain teachers?
Student code of conduct must be enforced or we are setting our teachers up for failure. We need strong leadership at the Board and Administrator level to uphold behavior standards so our teachers can teach and our students can learn.
Future Voters: Assess how the District prepares students to participate in their country’s democracy and describe what the Board can do to support civic engagement efforts.
I miss the days where "civics" was a class! In order to set our kids up to be productive citizens, the district should offer a civics course as an elective.
