What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I have served as an elected county commissioner in Harris County for thirty-two years and as an elected constable for four years. Serving our great citizens is an honor. As commissioner, I gained expertise in budgeting for staff, equipment, technology, and operations in the tax assessor-collector’s office. I will chart a path to implement innovative strategies to streamline the office, ensuring a friendly, well-trained, and efficient staff for the benefit of Harris County residents.
What are the biggest challenges facing the Tax-Assessor Collector’s Office and how will you address these challenges?
The Office has a dedicated team. However, it lacks the necessary funds for efficient operation. To meet the demands of the auto, property, and voter registration divisions, the office requires additional funding to increase full-time staff. Adequate resources are essential for the Office to deliver excellent customer service. I am committed to finding ways to enhance the Office's budget through both county and state funding.
What initiatives will you implement to effectively manage staff, technology, and other resources to improve service to the community?
To better serve our county residents, it is crucial to hire and train more full-time employees. I also plan to initiate a study to evaluate the hours of operation and locations, aiming to identify potential improvements in customer service. Additionally, I will review the current transaction processes, with a particular focus on vehicular transactions, to expedite services for individuals and auto dealers.
What plans do you have to facilitate voter registration for residents of Harris County?
I will ensure that qualified individuals can easily register to vote by making voter registration cards readily available in the community. For those needing assistance, contact information will be publicized and provided to facilitate requests and support. Additionally, I will collaborate with our schools to emphasize the importance of voting and encourage 18-year-olds to register, providing them with the necessary tools to do so.
