Marquette Greene-Scott

Democrat
U.S. Representative District 22
Non-partisan election information about Marquette Greene-Scott, Candidate - U.S. Representative District 22 by the League of Women Voters of Houston
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
My educational and professional background provide me with the qualifications necessary to be an effective Congresswoman. I am a former mathematics teacher and an attorney practicing law in Texas and Louisiana. I have been on The City of Iowa Colony's city council since May 2021 and Mayor Pro Tem since May 2023. I have policy making experience under the confines of nonpartisanship. This affords me the opportunity to vote only on issues and what is best for the city and my constituents.
What actions do you support to address cost of living concerns?
I believe that we need to start by raising the federal minimum wage. It has been $7.25 since July 2009. Implementing or adjusting minimum wage laws can help raise incomes for workers. Programs like Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and HeadStart programs can reduce healthcare and childcare costs. We can look at housing costs as well. By combing income-based and cost-based approaches, we can enhance the well-being of low-income households without increasing government spending.
What are your priorities regarding immigration policy? What specific actions would you take to address these priorities?
The U.S. immigration system is broken. Immigration reform centers on finding a balanced and comprehensive approach to addressing various aspects of the immigration system. There must be a complete overhaul of the system. This includes strengthening border security, modernizing border infrastructure, and granting pathways to citizenship of undocumented immigrants already living here and asylum seekers. I would work with other lawmakers to find a more humanitarian solution.
What is the role of the federal government in establishing laws and regulations related to reproductive healthcare services including family planning, pregnancy care and post- partum services? Please explain your position.
The federal government must protect women's bodily autonomy against judicial activism and radical state legislatures. This is done by codifying Roe v. Wade. A woman's right to choose what's best for her body should not be left to unqualified legislators but to her and her doctor. They are not stopping at abortion care. They are going after IVF and contraception. Maternal mortality in the U.S. is the highest of developed nations. The current restrictive bans will only worsen this situation.
What measures do you support to address environmental issues and natural disasters, such as air quality, extreme weather events, drought, and flooding?
We have to tackle climate change and global warming. We can do this by expanding the utilization of renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power, bioenergy, and hydroelectric energy. I believe that we need to train people to work in the areas of renewable energy. The training will help those in oil and gas, etc. transition. We should also offer trades in those areas for high school and trade school students to have them job ready in those areas.
